The Top 7 Healthcare Blogs You Probably Aren’t Reading But Should Be

Happy Friday! Today, we thought we’d give a little shout out to some blogs out there that don’t get as much readership as we think they deserve. We get updates from all sorts of official magazines and publications, but we also enjoy getting a different perspective on the issues from people who are not tied down by editors and such. At CareCloud, we follow quite a few blogs that fly under a lot of people’s radars for some reason or another.

These are usually well-rounded, perceptive, and all-around fascinating sources of news and opinions from some truly knowledgable individuals, all of whom have some special connection to the healthcare industry. We find each of them to be uniquely insightful and incredibly informative, so we’re going to try and help expose the community to these thoughtful and illuminating sources of healthcare news and opinion. Maybe we don’t give them as much credit as they deserve, and maybe they get way more readers than we do, but so what?

Without further ado, and in no specific order, our top 7 healthcare blogs you probably aren’t reading, but should be:

1. OrthoOnc

Felasfa Wodajo is something of a superhuman, dividing his time between blogging, practicing medicine, and developing software solutions for physicians. We want to give some kudos to his excellent blog, OrthOnc, where he discusses everything from healthcare policy to technology. Felasfa, who also writes for iMedicalApps, was kind enough to let our CEO, Albert Santalo, contribute a guest post, which sparked a sort of one-off debate in the comments. This kind of discussion really gets our blood flowing, and we’d definitely like to see more people joining in on these conversations.

2. 33 Charts

When it comes to using the latest technology to drive business and perfect the user experience in the world of healthcare, 33 Charts is a great place to go for breaking news and pertinent, well-crafted opinions. With topics ranging from the use of bookmarking services to improve efficiency to the effect of social media on the physician-patient experience, Doctor V’s insight is always spot-on. Whenever we feel that there aren’t enough people out there trying to truly modernize the healthcare industry, we just take a look at 33 Charts and think, “Well at leastsomeone understands us.”

3. MGMA In Practice Blog

The MGMA In Practice Blog is the online voice of the Medical Group Management Association. The MGMA is the de-facto standard for professionalism when it comes to practice management, and almost anyone in the industry has surely heard of them. Their blog is both informative and well written, and with a constant stream of timely updates on relevant subjects, it’s a wonder they don’t have more followers, especially amongst practice management professionals.

4. Care Practice

Appealing to our love for all things modern, e.g. social media and minimalism, Care Practice is definitely one of our favorite blogs. Aaron Blackledge, who owns a very successful practice in San Francisco, runs this aesthetically- and mentally- intriguing publication, and it’s a great place to go for witty banter on science, social media and healthcare with a decidedly humorous slant, as well as some off-topic stuff that still resonates with the community at large.

5. Musings of a Distractible Mind

OK, so maybe Dr. Rob gets a lot of readers, and maybe you have heard heard of his blog, Musings of a Distractible Mind, but his unique, borderline-eccentric take on the industry is too good not mention in this list. Strange but not harmful, Dr. Rob’s posts are always informative and poignant, shedding some light on the more ridiculous aspects of health and science with a slapstick smile and a subtle wink.

6. HealthPopuli

One of the more colorful (literally) sites in the world of healthcare blogs is HealthPopuli. This ongoing testimony of the trials and tribulations of the healthcare industry is the work of one Jane Sarasohn-Kahn. She blogs about healthcare primarily from an economic angle – which is of course, one of its most contentious angles – and always comes off sounding incredibly well-informed and thoughtful. Jane is also a columnist for iHealthBeat, a California publication that manages to deliver compelling articles right into my mailbox every day.

7. Number Needed to Treat

The work of a medical student, Number Needed to Treat combines a professional urgency with a contemporary smirk to offer some intelligent discourse on the way healthcare interacts with life. The views and opinions of a physician-in-training, this blog provides a unique window into the world of medicine from the bottom up. Take a look at this post to see what we mean by “contemporary smirk.”

8. ScieneSoft

ScienceSoft keeps up with trends and innovations surrounding the Healthcare IT sector, and regularly post fresh content on healthcare data analytics, information security, patient and hospital mobile app development and more. They aim to help senior IT managers, practice managers, healthcare providers, medical device manufacturers, and pharmaceutical companies discover the symbiosis of IT and healthcare. Check out this post about building trust with patients through the use of software.

Bonus: Government HealthIT News

While it’s not a personal take on the issues of today, but rather a large source of news and information, we think that it’s worth mentioning this one as well. Despite being the official publication of HIMSS and in turn, the federal government, we sometimes get a feeling that people don’t really pay attention to Government HealthIT News. Who knows, we could be wrong about this (and all the other blogs listed above), but just in case, there you go.

What do you think?

Have we left anything out? We like to think we’re web-savvy and cut from a different mold, with a good grip on the goings-on in the world of healthcare, no matter how obscure, but if there are any great blogs out there that we failed to mention, let us know in the comments!
