The Physician’s ICD-10 Resource Guide

Worried about the upcoming switch from ICD-9 to ICD-10? You’re not alone.

With the number of diagnosis and procedure codes jumping from 17,000 to 141,000, many physician practices are scrambling to implement the new classification system before the October 1, 2014 deadline.

Understandably, the change to ICD-10 will be a major adjustment for providers of all sizes, from large hospitals to smaller medical offices. Providers will need to devote staff time and financial resources to transition initiatives to ensure a smooth conversion.

According to the American Hospital Association and American Health Information Management Association’s ICD-10-CM Field Testing Project, practices will need to dedicate at least 16 hours of ICD-10-CM training for each of their most experienced coding professionals. Between 16-24 hours of additional training may be necessary for ICD-10-PCS codes.

It’s best to develop a transition plan now by preparing your financials and scheduling staff training sessions early. If you aren’t prepared to use ICD-10 codes by the deadline, claims, and other transactions will be rejected, thus hurting your reimbursements and cash flow.

Here at PYP, we understand your worries, so we’ve compiled the best ICD-10 resources and tools from around the web to help you smoothly transition away from ICD-9. Below you’ll find some great websites that will provide the information you’ll need to successfully implement ICD-10.

For example, the University of Wisconsin recently launched this website to provide medical billers with a tool that takes currently active ICD-9 codes and converts them to the appropriate ICD-10 codes.
