5 Physicians to Follow on Twitter

Twitter can be a hub for experts, becoming a part of social media users’ networks and helping form what New York Times technology writer Nick Bilton refers to as “anchoring communities” of information.

A trusted online source is usually among the top 5% of his or her network and shares relevant information that educates readers and followers within a particular field.

On that note, we’ve highlighted five physicians to follow on Twitter.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta – @SanjayguptaCNN

Gupta is most famous for his media work regarding health-related issues on CNN, but he’s also a professor of Neurosurgery at Emory, Associate Chief of the Neurosurgery service at Grady Memorial in Atlanta and a former Surgeon General candidate when Obama first took office.

Drew Pinsky – @Drdrew

Perhaps the most famous on this list because of his television appearances on shows like Celebrity Rehab, Pinsky is also a board-certified internist and addiction medicine specialist that does a good job of navigating professionalism and salaciousness.

Dr. Mehmet Oz – @DrOz

This Harvard grad and Oprah darling teaches at Columbia and recently co-founded Sharecare, a health technology startup featuring a QA platform for users with health-related questions.

Kevin Pho – @KevinMD

Pho is an internal medicine physician living in New Hampshire, and is a leader in health care social media via Twitter and his influential KevinMD.com, boasting over 100,000 subscribers.

Dr. Mike Sevilla – @drmikesevilla

Formerly @doctoranonymous, Dr. Mike Sevilla is a family physician, social media enthusiast, internet radio host and blogger who doesn’t yet have the kind of following Kevin Pho does, but given the content of his tweets its only a matter of time.
