Don't Care About HIPAA? You ShouldWhen the HIPAA Privacy Rule went into effect in 2003, it functioned, in part, as a major scare tactic for medical practice administrators across the country.

As a flurry of “privacy rights” paperwork was distributed to patients, clinical and clerical staffers were warned to watch what they said about patients – and who they said it to. Managers and doctors tightened up their handling of medical records to make sure they were in compliance with the policies.

In an effort to help children with cerebral palsy or spina bifida undergoing physical therapy and diagnostic testing, a group of engineering students at Rice University have constructed a videogame system consisting of Wii Balance Boards arranged between handrails and a screen.

Patients shoot approaching monsters by hitting specific spots of the boards with their feet. As they improve, the game becomes more challenging and gamers rack up points. The setup both intends to improve balance and coordinated movement, as well as incorporate feedback from the handrails into the game.

What Can The New iPad Do for Healthcare

There is always a bit of mystery behind a new Apple release. Each one is conveniently close to a major technology conference the company notoriously does not attend – CES in the new iPad’s case – and engulfed in rumors and tech insider talk. Engadget and TechCrunch go nuts and old media sources, well, also go nuts.

Whether it’s Steve Jobs or Tim Cook, an Apple release event is as treasurable as the company’s packaging – each Apple product is like a present you can’t wait to open. But will the new iPad be a gift to healthcare?

Meaningful Use Timeline

Meaningful Use attestation is confusing. Rules are in constant flux, there are different ‘lists’ of requirements to choose from and then there’s the vague language CMS uses.

What are you to do? It’s tough enough to learn the differences between CCHIT and Drummond Group for certification, or whether to decide on a cloud-based or client-server EHR. We’ve created this concise Meaningful Use timeline to make these issues a little easier to understand.

John Hallock of CareCloudJohn Hallock, CareCloud’s VP of Corporate Communications, applauds the appointment of Todd Park as federal chief technology officer but wonders what it means for the health IT industry.

In March of 2005, I staffed an interview between Todd Park and Steve Lohr of The New York Times in the cafeteria of the old New York offices of the “Grey Lady.” At the time, Park was heading a very small web-based start-up company that was trying to convince medical groups – and on that day, a leading national technology business reporter – that web-based “cloud” technologies would become mainstream in the healthcare IT industry and were the only logical means to get the hundreds of thousands of independent U.S. doctors and their small offices to go digital.

CareCloud at AMGA 2012

Bad weather in Texas made our flight to California a bit of a bumpy ride, but… we’re here! And as the saying goes, it’s not the journey, it’s the destination. As promised, the American Medical Group Association’s 2012 Conference in San Diego is a major gathering of the “best and brightest in healthcare” – and the CareCloud team is happy to be counting itself among that group this year.

Today, we’re really feeling the love from the AMGA-attending crowd. Our eye-catching booth display is helping us really stand out from the competition in the exhibitor hall – it’s winning us tons of compliments – and so is the superior usability of the CareCloud system, which our sales pros are demoing to lots of interested people.

Once again, some of CareCloud’s talented staffers are traveling west for an important industry event. This time, six of us will be staying classy in San Diego for the American Medical Group Association’s 2012 Annual Conference.

The theme of this year’s conference is “Learning from the Best,” and yours truly is especially excited to do just that! I’m fortunate enough to be one of the CareCloud reps attending the event, and I couldn’t be more thrilled at the opportunity it’ll give me to meet some industry leaders from across the U.S. and network with, as the AMGA puts it, “the best and brightest in health care!”
