The Feds Want to Know: How Should EHRs Share Data With Each Other?

Do you have an idea to improve the sharing of secure healthcare data among different electronic health record systems? If so, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) wants to hear from you.

You have until April 3, 2015 to submit your ideas to ONC.

On January 30, 2015, the agency issued a draft of their 10-year roadmap to drive greater EHR interoperability. It’s only version 1.0. More guidance than regulation, the federal agency wants to hear from providers, consumers, state governments, payers, private companies and others with a stake in greater data-driven healthcare.

Their “Connecting Health and Care for the Nation: A Shared Nationwide Interoperability Roadmap” draft report calls for standards to foster the exchange of healthcare information that includes:

* Patient demographics
* Lab report findings
* A means to identify all providers caring for the same patient

ONC wants a majority of providers and individuals finding, sending and receiving clinical information electronically by 2017. The question is: How do we make this a reality?

“Great progress has been made to digitize the care experience, and now it’s time to free up this data so patients and providers can securely access their health information when and where they need it,” Health & Human Services Secretary Sylvia M. Burwell said in an HHS news release. “A successful learning system relies on an interoperable health IT system where information can be collected, shared, and used to improve health, facilitate research, and inform clinical outcomes.”

Ready to help ONC realize their dream of a standardized, vendor-neutral, nationwide platform for EHR interoperability?
